| Lately I have had a horrible time with HEAD from darcs.  It seems to
| be getting better ( builds ) though, as of yesterday, there were some
| significant known bugs in HEAD.

It's worth subscribing to cvs-ghc if you are building the HEAD.  There
have been announcements there telling you not to rely on the HEAD for
the next week or two -- we're upgrading to use FC as the intermediate
language. 

Sorry about that. Use the ghc-6.6 repository if you want a stable build!
