Mac OS X 10.4.8 fails to darcs get --verbose --partial http://darcs.haskell.org/ghc

This sounds very much to me like something wrong with the network between you 
and darcs.haskell.org, and the fact that nobody else seems to be having 
difficulties suggests that the problem is nearer to your end.  Perhaps your 
NAT/firewall is flaky - try a firmware upgrade?  Or something strange happening 
at your ISP?
