Hello,

We have had an IRC meeting on freenode recently (as Ashish previously
announced), where we tried to set up goals for the FreeBSD Haskell
Effort. The (active) participants of this meeting where Ashish,
Jacula and myself. Please note that these points are just for
"starting something", they are not carved into stone. Feel free to
add your comments.

So, let me summarize the points, our possible future goals (thanks to Ashish):

1. GHC 6.10.x port should be pushed. Try to integrate the latest GHC
into the FreeBSD ports tree as soon as possible, make the actual ports
working with it.

2. Conventions to be employed:
  a) about PKGNAMEPREFIX and PKGNAMESUFFIX in bsd.haskell.mk.
Prefixes and suffixes for package names should be controlled by
bsd.haskell.mk, so the port directories should not contain any prefix,
but the packages should (e.g. -ghc-6.10.1). This would make easier to
support more Haskell compilers if needed.
  b) pkg-descr format. Completely adopt the hackage description
format or try to merge it with the FreeBSD ports description format.
Well, that is the question. I am trying to consult with experienced
ports committers regarding this.

3. No support for side-by-side installation of multiple versions of
GHC at the moment. Usually the latest GHC is supported, there is no
need for further complexities.

 4. Deadlines to be decided to make sure we make it before 7.3 or 8.0
[TOP PRIORITY]. If we want to have our work published, it would be
better to adjust our deadlines to the different port slushes and
freezes. Port freeze for FreeBSD 7.2 is already in progress, so the
next target is 7.3 and/or 8.0.

Kind regards,
:g
