 After spending a few more hours on this I suspect that the problem might
 be caused by two versions of `binary` package installed on my system. If
 so then of course this is not a bug in GHC, but I'm yet to verify this.

 So is there a way to tell the build system to use one particular version
 of binary package? Hiding the package using `ghc-pkg hide` does not work
 and removing any of these two versions will break a lot of installed
 packages - I'd like to avoid that.
