 Ah, I misspoke in earnest without looking more deeply. It does look like
 the ```callq  *(%rdi)``` is the indirection we're still hitting in some
 sense, although I'm not sure why it's different from apple's
 implementation in libc: with -O2, this is minimized to a simple load and
 call, but it's still a significant overhead for the access, at a glance.
