 This sounds like John Meacham's "magic underscore" (see
 [http://repetae.net/john/computer/jhc/jhc.html the JHC documentation]).

 Then again, it also reminds me of the Haskell 98 report (see just above
 [http://www.haskell.org/onlinereport/standard-prelude.html#$vundefined
 undefined's definition])
