So perhaps this could be a reasonable semantics?
Iteratee a = [Char] -> Maybe (a, [Char])
= MaybeT (State [Char]) a
symbol  = Nothing
symbol (c:cs) = Just (c, cs)
I'm not experienced with iteratees. Does this miss something?
