I don't claim to know a great deal about floating point, but Cale
Gibbard's suggestion (use encodeFloat.decodeFloat) looks reasonable to
me. I have an old item on my GHC ToDo list that says "make
encodeFloat.decodeFloat work for NaN" :-)
