I don't know whether I mentioned it in the original thread, but
the build/installation stuff for HaXml is pretty lightweight,
and system/compiler independent in as far as it supports either
ghc or nhc98 (no hugs yet I'm afraid).  It might therefore make a
good starting point for other independent packages.  However, much
as I would like to look into generalising this framework for more
widespread use, I don't think I really have the time...
