We should also separate out the two different kinds of MonadPlus 
instances. There are those such as [] that satisfy

   mplus a b >>= k = mplus (a >>= k) (b >>= k)

And there are those such as Maybe, IO and STM that satisfy

   mplus (return a) b = return a
