oh gee, there seems to be some confusion. At least, I was confused. 
Well, here's a list from the GHC(i) 6.12.1 prompt about what's in 
Data.Functor:

 > :browse Data.Functor
(<$>) :: (Functor f) => (a -> b) -> f a -> f b
class Functor f where
   fmap :: (a -> b) -> f a -> f b
   (<$) :: a -> f b -> f a
