Thanks for the detailed bug report! I wish all were this thorough.

Almost all build problems with the darcs repo (all?) are due to 
not using the darcs version of X11-extras.

Grab that from:
 
     darcs get --partial http://darcs.haskell.org/~sjanssen/X11-extras
