Doing it this way allows the gnome panel with autohide and without autohide to work sanely. Unfortunately, this makes the AvoidStrutsOn variant of AvoidStruts behave very predictably wrong (though I'm not really sure why someone would want to avoid struts in only certain directions...). I think the proper approach to fixing this is to have three states, instead of two. That is, Avoid, Hide, and Ignore --- but nobody would ever want to toggle between all three, you'd probably want to ignore some and toggle between avoid and hide. To make something like that work, I would presumably add the list of struts to hide to AvoidStruts' state, which would, as a bonus, make the module more efficient. Does anyone use AvoidStrutsOn? I'd like to hear some use cases for its existence... -- Justin Bogner From me at twifkak.com Fri Jul 4 02:28:39 2008 From: me at twifkak.com (Devin Mullins) Date: Fri Jul 4 02:19:39 2008 Subject: [xmonad] [Fwd: Bug#473103 closed by Ian Lynagh (wibble) (Bug#473103: fixed in haskell-x11 1.4.2-1)] In-Reply-To: <1215012719.5583.2.camel@otto.ehbuehl.net> References: <1215012719.5583.2.camel@otto.ehbuehl.net> Message-ID: <20080704062839.GB21027@twifkak.com> On Wed, Jul 02, 2008 at 05:31:59PM +0200, Joachim Breitner wrote: > FYI, a xinerama-enabled version of haskell-x11 was finally uploaded to > Debian unstable. It appears from some IRC discussionn that AvoidStrutsOn is indeed used by some people, so a fix that allows it to work too would be desirable. a-9 was asking about this on IRC, so I just thought I'd bump this thread to keep this alive. Also, the patch(es) should probably be uploaded to the bug tracker, so we don't lose them in the mists. I'm providing them in hopes that they help the discussion of the issue. (I sent the first of these to the mailing list, but I'd like it to be on the bug tracker, as per shepheb's suggestion on the list. visibleStruts.patch brings strut windows to the top of X's stacking order, which seems an appropriate thing to do. The problem here is that this breaks toggleStruts, since xmonad covers up struts by using their space, but not hiding the strut. hiddenStruts.patch unmaps struts that aren't being avoided, and maps them again when they are being avoided. This way, hiding and showing struts behaves somewhat more sanely, instead of just drawing over the panel, we remove the panel from the screen. Perhaps unfortunately though, this means that if avoidStrutsOn is being used, any struts that aren't being avoided will always be invisible --- I'm not sure if this is what people want. I strongly encourage anyone who uses avoidStrutsOn to test this patch and give feedback on whether or not the behaviour makes sense. I would suggest that passing html 4.01 (strict) validation would be more useful. See this page: http://hixie.ch/advocacy/xhtml And, this related posted I recently sent to the haskell server pages list when dealing with some related issues: http://groups.google.com/group/haskell-server-pages/msg/299c958a96bfba25? and this article: http://www.digital-web.com/articles/html5_xhtml2_and_the_future_of_the_web/ Short Version: - serving xhtml as text/html is broken and provides little or no useful benefits - serving xhtml as application/xml+xhtml does not work with konqueror or IE (and probably lynx and links) - in my opinion, HTML 5 has a much greater chance of succeeding than any version of xhtml. So, you might as well use HTML 4.01 strict. - in my opinion HTML 5 and WAS 1.0 will be pretty cool. In my opinion, the *only* reason to use xhtml would be if: - you wanted to use some feature that *only* works with xhtml (such as MathML, svg, etc). - you actually serve the page as application/xml+xhtml, which means that: - you are completely fine with the page not being viewable at all with konqueror, ie, links, lynx, and several other browsers. Up until a few months ago, I also would have used xhtml, but now I am pretty much HTML all the way. Anyway, I am happy to answer any questions you have, and I won't complain if you decide to stick with xhtml. j. A firm solution is to build the X11 package afresh for you system, which will enable Xinerama, assuming you have Xinerama headers installed. -- Don From i92guboj at terra.es Mon Jul 7 18:55:31 2008 From: i92guboj at terra.es (=?ISO-8859-1?Q?Jes=FAs?= Guerrero) Date: Mon Jul 7 18:46:16 2008 Subject: [xmonad] Home page redesign In-Reply-To: <87bq19tr59.wl%jeremy@n-heptane.com> References: <20080707074237.GB28829@twifkak.com> <20080707102550.GA29362@twifkak.com> <87bq19tr59.wl%jeremy@n-heptane.com> Message-ID: <20080708005531.a3b01892.i92guboj@terra.es> Hello, On Mon, 07 Jul 2008 12:45:22 -0700 Jeremy Shaw wrote: > - serving xhtml as application/xml+xhtml does not work with konqueror > or IE (and probably lynx and links) > [...snip...] > - you are completely fine with the page not being viewable at all > with konqueror, ie, links, lynx, and several other browsers. I would also be interested in knowing the downsides of using xhtml. I wouldn't say that xhtml is "not viewable at all" on konqueror or IE. I have designed some small sites in xhtml 1.1 and I have found no problem (other than IE being completely idiotic about CSS, png and a few other standards that it likes to break and can be somewhat worked around. So, any links and extra info would be appreciated. The first one you provide is a nice document explaining why incorrect xhtml code will not work. But that is like complaining because incorrect C code will not compile, or better yet, like to complain because gcc will not compile c++ code. The reason is simple enough: it's a C compiler, not a C++ one. I have heard of this a few times, but no one actually took the time to explain it in a sane way. As an example, you can check this site I am designing (it's a basic template and something experimental, but it's just an example). The relevant pieces of my xhtml files are these: ======================
