The head bit was not directly related: when setting this up at first I  
messed up
binding 'mod-x h' which seems to have unbound mod-h, one of my navigation  
keys, and
bound it to the runOrRaise hback action. This persisted even after removing  
and
rebinding mod-h and runOrRaise hback. Both mod-h and whatever was bound to  
runOrRaise
hback after that gave the head [] error till I removed
~.xmonad/xmonad?{o,hi,x86*linux} and recompiled.
